Daisy Mae's Story
Some stories begin with hope.
Daisy Mae's began with heartbreak.
For years, Daisy was used for breeding before being discarded at an overcrowded shelter when she was no longer wanted. She had learned not to trust people and wanted nothing to do with them. She kept her distance, avoided affection, and had lost faith that humans could bring anything good into her life.
Then, everything became even more difficult.
While playing with other dogs, Daisy suffered a devastating head injury that required emergency hospitalization. The injury caused a brain bleed, seizures, paralysis along the entire right side of her body, loss of bowel control, and difficulty swallowing. She could no longer eat on her own and depended entirely on hand-feeding and around-the-clock care.
Because of the extent of her injuries and the level of lifelong care she was expected to need, euthanasia was recommended.
We saw something different.
We saw a little dog who deserved the opportunity to write a different ending to her story.
Daisy joined the Misfit family in 2022, and from that day forward, we focused on one small victory at a time. Before rehabilitation could begin, we first had to earn her trust. We wanted Daisy to understand that, for the first time in her life, the people around her weren't going anywhere.
Over the months that followed, she received around-the-clock care, daily rehabilitation exercises, therapeutic massage, herbal support, individualized nutrition, and more love than she had ever known.
Slowly, Daisy began proving everyone wrong.
She learned to eat independently again.
She regained control of her bowels.
She learned to walk.
Then she learned to run.
Today, although she still carries a slight limp on her right side, you'd never know the odds she overcame by watching her play with her friends, enjoy short pack walks, or curl up on the couch for a cuddle.
Daisy Mae's story isn't defined by everything she lost.
It's defined by everything she fought to get back.
Daisy Mae's Health Journey
Daisy Mae's traumatic brain injury changed her life forever, and although she's made remarkable progress, she continues to live with the lasting effects of that injury.
She receives daily medication to help manage her seizures and was diagnosed with a heart murmur in 2024, which is carefully monitored by her veterinary team.
Daisy also has severe food and environmental allergies that affect her skin and overall comfort. Working closely with a clinical pet nutritionist, we've developed a customized nutrition plan that helps keep her feeling her best while supporting her unique medical needs.
Today, Daisy is up to date on her vaccinations, microchipped, spayed, and receives ongoing medical care tailored specifically to her. While she'll always have some physical limitations, they don't stop her from enjoying life, playing with her friends, or reminding us every day that resilience comes in the smallest packages.
Daisy Mae's Training
Despite everything she's overcome, Daisy Mae is house trained, crate trained, and has successfully completed both basic and advanced obedience training.
Training has played an important role in Daisy's rehabilitation, helping her rebuild confidence, strengthen her bond with people, and regain independence after her traumatic brain injury. Every milestone she reached is a testament to her determination and the incredible resilience that has inspired everyone who's had the privilege of knowing her.

Because of the lasting effects of her traumatic brain injury, Daisy requires lifelong, specialized care. She receives daily medication, follows a carefully managed diet designed with the support of a clinical pet nutritionist, enjoys weekly medicated baths to keep her skin healthy, and continues to be monitored by both her veterinary team and neurologist. She also benefits from regular therapeutic massage, supportive bedding, and the comfort of always having someone nearby who understands her unique needs.
To Daisy, these routines are simply part of everyday life.
To us, they're one of the many ways we keep the promise we made when she joined the Misfit family.
As a sanctuary resident, Daisy will never have to worry about finding another home or whether someone can meet her medical needs. She'll spend the rest of her life surrounded by the people who know her best, the friends she loves to play with, and the individualized care that allows her to continue thriving.
