Meet Goose —

​

Goose originally belonged to another local rescue. Without an available foster home, he was being housed in a boarding and training environment. During his time there, the volunteers who knew him became increasingly concerned as they watched his behavior change. Goose was shutting down, becoming fearful and struggling with both people and other dogs. There were concerns about how he had been handled, and after an incident occurred that put his future at risk, his rescue began looking for somewhere else for him to go.

That was when they reached out to us through All Out K9.

​

We knew some of the circumstances Goose would be coming out of and agreed to bring him into our Rescue-Rated Boarding Program. This was shortly before our move to the new Ranch, so when we packed up our lives and relocated the Misfits, Goose came right along with us.

​

The Goose who first arrived in our care was incredibly shut down. New people were frightening, interacting with other dogs was difficult, and trusting the world around him did not come easily.

​

Although we had only been asked to provide him with boarding, we couldn’t ignore the dog standing in front of us. We began working with him on confidence, socialization and training, giving him the time, consistency and safe experiences he needed to begin learning that not every interaction had to be something he feared.

​

Slowly, we started seeing pieces of his personality emerge.

​

As Goose’s stay continued, the financial responsibility of long-term boarding became increasingly difficult for his rescue to maintain. Eventually, they approached Misfit Ranch and asked if we would be willing to take over his care permanently.

 

By then, we already knew our answer. Goose officially became a Misfit.

​

One of the first things we did after taking over his care was address another concern we had developed during his stay: his nutrition. We completed a nutritional panel and transitioned him to a food better suited to his individual needs.

​

What happened next was incredible to witness.

​

Goose had already begun making progress through training, thoughtful socialization and the security of a consistent environment. But within weeks of addressing his nutritional needs, that progress seemed to accelerate. The dog who had spent so much time hiding inside himself began coming out of his shell.

​

And it turned out there was one heck of a personality hiding in there.

​

Today, Goose is almost unrecognizable from the frightened dog who first arrived.

​

He is affectionate and incredibly playful. He seeks out interaction with the people he trusts and has made tremendous progress in his training. He has earned himself a reputation as one of our resident class clowns and seems to consider making us laugh part of his daily responsibilities.

​

We are incredibly grateful that we were able to provide Goose with the comfort, consistency and safety he needed to rebuild his trust in people and feel secure enough to finally be himself.

​

His past will always be part of his story, but it does not get to define who he is.

Goose's story is about what can happen when we look beyond the behavior in front of us and ask what a dog might need instead of simply deciding what is “wrong” with them. It is about patience, environment, nutrition, training and the profound difference that feeling safe can make.

​

Most importantly, it is about a dog who was once afraid of the world discovering that life can actually be pretty fun.

​

And Goose seems determined to make up for lost time. ❤️
