We Know They Need Help

One of the questions we hear most often is: "Are you aware of this dog?"

The answer is almost always yes.

We work closely with our local shelters and maintain regular communication regarding dogs who are facing euthanasia, particularly those needing behavioral rehabilitation, medical care, or the specialized support that aligns with our mission.

Knowing a dog needs help and being able to responsibly bring that dog into our care, however, are two very different things. Unlike some other rescues in our community, every dog we rescue receives a lifelong commitment from our family.

Before saying yes to another dog, we have to make sure we can continue providing exceptional care to every dog we've already promised to protect.

Why We're Always Full

Misfit Ranch operates differently than many people realize. We don't rescue dogs until we're full. We rescue within our capacity.

That means we're almost always caring for the maximum number of dogs we can responsibly support.

As soon as one of our adoptable Misfits finds their forever family, another dog takes that open space.

This system allows us to help dogs continuously while ensuring every Misfit receives the individualized care, rehabilitation, medical attention, training, and time they deserve.

Rescuing Responsibly

One of the biggest misconceptions about rescue and shelter networking is that asking rescues to take in another dog is the best way to help dogs get out of the shelter system. That just isn't so. Because even if a rescue has the financial backing, having the space and human support to care for the dog is something else entirely.

Rescuing responsibly means staying within your mission, your capacity and your resources.

When those three things remain in balance, dogs receive the quality of care they deserve, and the rescue can continue saving lives for years to come. Sometimes that means making the heartbreaking decision to say, "We're Full". Not because the dog isn't worthy. But because the dogs already in our care deserve us to keep the promises we've already made to them.

History has shown, especially within our community, that rescues who take on more dogs than they have available space/fosters, staffing, finances, or support systems often find themselves facing impossible decisions.

When resources become stretched too thin, everyone suffers.

The dogs.

The volunteers.

The adopters.

And ultimately, the rescue itself.

At Misfit Ranch, we'd rather rescue responsibly today so we're still here saving dogs ten years from now than overextend ourselves and risk failing the dogs who already depend on us and those we've yet to have the honor of saving.

The Best Way Help Shelter Dogs Reach Rescue

We need room.

The fastest way to create that room isn't asking rescues to take more dogs.

It's helping the dogs they already have find loving homes.

Every adoption creates space for another rescue.

Every adoption saves more than one life.

You Can Help Shelter Dogs Without Spending a Dollar

Instead of contacting rescues about dogs currently in the shelter system, find which of your community's rescues pull from the shelter when they have the space to do so, like Misfit Ranch. Then support these rescues by helping them find forever homes for the dogs they currently have in their care, which would open up the space needed for them to pull the next dog.

• Follow shelter pulling local rescues on social media.

• Like, comment on, and share their adoptable dogs.

• Tell your friends, family and colleagues about their adoptable dogs.

• Encourage responsible adoption, so dogs don't end up in the shelter to begin with.

You may not be in a position to adopt... But someone in your network might be. And if they aren't, they may share a dog's story to their network and a forever home is found.

Sometimes a simple share reaches the one family who was meant to find that dog all along!

Helping Rescues Continue to Rescue

Beyond adoptions, rescues also need resources.

Donations, wish list items, project sponsorships, fundraising events, and volunteer support all allow rescues to care for more animals and continue growing their programs.

At Misfit Ranch, we're actively expanding our facilities so that we can increase the number of dogs we're able to save in the future. Every completed project moves us one step closer to opening more kennel space, helping more dogs, and relieving pressure on our local shelter system.
