Meet Themba — the misunderstood soul who never stopped hoping for the right person.

For a year and a half, Themba’s life was a cycle of second chances that never quite stuck.

He moved in and out of the shelter system, passed from one home to the next—each time with people who, by their own admission, didn’t have the experience needed for a dog like him. Believed to be a Belgian Malinois or Malinois mix, Themba needed more than just a home—he needed understanding, structure, and purpose.

Without it, he was set up to fail.

His need for mental stimulation, physical exercise, and thoughtful training went unmet, and like so many working dogs placed in the wrong environments, he was repeatedly returned. Each move chipped away at his stability, leaving him more uncertain of the world around him.

And then things got harder.

While fostering can be life-saving, the right match makes all the difference. Unfortunately, Themba was placed with a foster who wasn’t equipped to meet his needs. Frustration replaced patience, and mishandling replaced guidance—causing him to lose trust in the very people he depended on.

From there, he was placed in a home that simply couldn’t provide the care he needed. With the shelter out of options and his past working against him, Themba was running out of time.

But his story didn’t end there.

A dedicated shelter volunteer, who saw past the confusion and into the dog Themba truly was, stepped in and connected him with us. On March 1st, 2025, Themba officially became part of the Misfit Ranch family—and finally, his story began to change.

Today, Themba is learning what it means to feel safe, understood, and valued.

He may take a moment to warm up to new people, but once he does, his true personality shines through. The unsure dog he once was gives way to a playful, affectionate goofball with a spirit that’s impossible not to love.

He has striking eyes that seem to look right through you—and a playful energy that quickly pulls you in.

Themba loves spending time with other dogs and truly comes alive in the right environment. And when he bonds with his person, he becomes incredibly loyal—wanting nothing more than to be by your side through it all.

Because of his background and breed tendencies, Themba will thrive in a home that understands working dogs and can provide the structure, leadership, and activity he needs to continue growing into his full potential.

He’s not the dog for everyone—but for the right person, he’s everything.

Themba has been overlooked, misunderstood, and given up on more times than he deserved. But through it all, he’s held onto his ability to trust again.

Now, he’s just waiting for someone who won’t give up on him.

If you’re looking for a loyal best friend, an adventure partner, and a dog who will meet you with his whole heart… Themba is ready to meet you.
