Gypsy's Story
Every journey has a beginning.
For Misfit Ranch, that beginning was Gypsy.
In April 2020, we received a call about a Belgian Malinois who had been left alone on a one-acre property after her owner passed away. With no one left to care for her, Gypsy survived the only way she knew how—hunting rabbits and lizards while waiting for someone to notice she was still there.
By the time she came to us, she was dehydrated, underweight, and facing an uncertain future.
But even then, we could see the dog she was meant to become.
Gypsy became the very first sanctuary resident at Misfit Ranch, and in many ways, she helped shape the rescue into what it is today.
Over the years, she's learned what it means to be safe, loved, and part of a family that isn't going anywhere. The frightened dog who once had to survive on her own has blossomed into a calm, confident girl who now helps welcome new Misfits as they begin their own healing journeys.
Today, Gypsy enjoys everything she once went without—comfortable places to rest, friends to play with, adventures around the Ranch, and people she knows she can trust.
Before there was a Ranch...
There was Gypsy.
And we'll always be grateful that she was the beginning of this incredible journey.
Gypsy's Health Journey
When Gypsy arrived at Misfit Ranch, the effects of living on her own were easy to see. She was underweight, dehydrated, and malnourished after spending an unknown amount of time surviving without consistent food or care.
One of our first priorities was helping her heal from the inside out.
We completed food intolerance and allergy testing to better understand Gypsy's nutritional needs and create a diet that would support her recovery. With proper nutrition, hydration, and compassionate care, she made remarkable progress.
As her body became healthier, her energy returned, her coat began to shine, and the resilient dog we knew was there all along started to flourish.
During her medical care, Gypsy was also spayed, microchipped, and brought up to date on her vaccinations.
Today, she's in excellent health and continues to thrive with the same individualized veterinary care, balanced nutrition, and preventative healthcare that every Misfit receives.
Gypsy's Training
Gypsy's greatest lesson wasn't learning obedience.
It was learning that she no longer had to do everything on her own.
After surviving independently for so long, Gypsy naturally preferred making her own decisions and exploring the world on her own terms. Before we could ask her to follow a cue or come when called, we first had to build a relationship where she genuinely wanted to spend time with us.
Through patience, consistency, and positive experiences, that relationship grew stronger every day.
As her trust in us deepened, Gypsy successfully completed basic obedience training, and we continued building the communication and partnership needed to responsibly give her off-leash privileges around the Ranch.
Like any independent spirit, Gypsy still occasionally reminds us that a rabbit can seem far more exciting than listening to people. But those moments are simply part of who she is—and one of the many reasons we adore her.
Today, Gypsy enjoys the freedom to explore the Ranch, spend time with her canine friends, and choose to walk beside the people she now knows she can trust.
For Gypsy, training was never about changing her independent spirit.
It was about helping her discover that she didn't have to face the world alone anymore.
Why I'm a Sanctuary Misfit
Gypsy is one of the most intelligent dogs we've ever had the privilege of caring for.
Her intelligence, athleticism, and determination are truly remarkable—but they also mean she has very unique needs.
After spending so much of her life surviving on her own, Gypsy developed an incredible ability to solve problems and create opportunities for herself. Whether it's climbing, jumping, opening doors, figuring out latches, or finding creative ways to explore beyond where she's supposed to be, Gypsy has never lacked confidence in her own abilities.
It's one of the many things we love about her.
It also means she requires an environment specifically designed to keep her safe.
Here at Misfit Ranch, we've been able to create that environment. From specialized housing to carefully managed routines and off-leash time in appropriate areas, every part of Gypsy's daily life has been thoughtfully designed around her unique personality and incredible abilities.
More importantly, she has the freedom to be exactly who she is.
Rather than asking Gypsy to fit into a traditional home, we've chosen to give her a home that fits her.
Here, she can explore, play with her friends, enjoy the Ranch, and live the happy, adventurous life she loves—all while remaining safe and surrounded by people who understand her.
